...what would a world be without recurrence, reiteration and repetition?
– Birony Fer the infinite line, 2OO4
I am captivated by acts of repetition. They can be in habits, memory, or visually in grids. The steady repeat of a circle is like a steady repeat of our breath, holding, shaping and reshaping our actions.
On the one hand, our lives are held in place by the rhythms of routine, the habits of memory and the security of our structures. On the other hand, there is the chaos of the world, the jumble of our thoughts, and the anarchy of freedom. Where the two worlds meet – routine and chaos - the freedom to improvise exists.
Within the formal structure of a repeated pattern, I find the freedom to improvise emerges and my personal expression can be formed.
